South Asia Journalists face increased attacks, media group says
March 25, 2009
(Bloomberg)Journalists face “severe risks” in South Asia, where members of the media are regularly killed and authorities fail to solve the crimes, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a report.
Attacks on reporters in Sri Lanka and Pakistan have increased in the past year and four other countries in the region -- Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and India -- are listed on the group’s “impunity index” published yesterday.
“We’re distressed to see justice worsen in places such as Sri Lanka and Pakistan,” said Joel Simon, the CPJ’s executive editor. “Our findings indicate that the failure to solve journalist murders perpetuate further violence against the press. Countries can get off this list of shame only by committing themselves to seeking justice.”
